John Barrett started Barrett Engineering in 1980. Our core business is building high quality, reliable, live steam Gauge 1 locos.  We work in a  scale of 10mm :1ft. Since 1980 we have been in continuous, full time manufacture and can justifiably claim that, together with our production team, we have more experience of design and manufacture than any other business in this field.
The current batch of  Locos will take us to well over 500 finished  locos and kits representing more than  40 different classes.  Of these over one third have been exported to many corners of the globe and most of them remain with their original owners.
In 2000 Steve Barrett, joined the business and the concentration turned to the supply  of model steam locomotive kits and accessories.  The kits are produced in twelve monthly parts, with detailed instructions and photographs.
The business embraces traditional skills of the craftsman together with modern technology. Computers are at the heart of design, producing accurate etching masks and laser cut steel. CNC Mill and lathe are used for production machining and pattern making. We cast our own whitemetal and inject our waxes for investment (lost wax) casting.
